STAM must be produced lishma, which means that before doing any of the many critical steps in STAM production, the person doing it must say out loud, “I am doing (action being done) for the sanctity of a Sefer Torah (or tefilin, or megila, etc.)”. Critical steps include the writing, tanning the hides to make klaf, scoring the lines for sirtut, sewing the sheets of klaf together, and much more. If any of these actions – even writing the smallest part of the smallest letter – was not done lishma, the STAM item is pasul.
